Professor de filosofia do direito em Oxford e Columbia, escreveu, entre outros livros, The Concept of a Legal System, Practical Reason and Norms, The Authority of Law, The Morality of Freedom, Authority, Ethics in the Public Domain, Engaging Reason, Value, Respect and Attachment e The Practice of Value. Um de seus últimos trabalhos Between Authority and Interpretation.
